What began as a novel idea just a few years ago has now exploded across the online marketing world. It seems that practically any new product is either based upon or connected to a membership site in one form or another. In fact, one of the hot new trends is to make the membership site itself the product.
Why is the membership site concept so successful? And better yet, how can you benefit from this prevailing online business model?
First of all, the main reason why memberships sites—that is, those that have been well planned and are operated well—work so well is that they meet a basic human need. No man or woman is an island; each of us wants to be needed and to feel that we belong. That’s exactly what the membership site concept offers: a unique community that like-minded individuals can belong to and contribute to.
Another reason is that membership sites create a sense of community. In our increasingly technologically advanced society we are becoming more isolated; by joining a membership site we are afforded a solution to our isolation and loneliness—a community chosen based upon our particular interests. Through the technology of the Internet we can create new relationships with like-minded people that we may never physically meet.
A third reason for the success of membership sites is the availability of new and unique content. Housed within each site is a variety of information, products and services related to a specific niche. Members are given access to these materials for their own use. Often this content has not been made available outside the site, while in other cases a portion of it is readily available; however, membership is required to gain access the full version.
Finally, membership sites offer a tremendous opportunity to the site owner to create a list of responsive—and sometimes, hyper-responsive—subscribers and customers. Think about it; you essentially have created a unique version of a “safe-list.” The members have given you permission to contact them, which creates the potential for up sells, promotion of related products and services, product research, etc. In effect, membership sites are the equivalent of an ezine “on steroids.” As long as you continue to provide meaningful content that is high quality, you will continue to build credibility that could in turn cause your members to begin to look upon your recommendations with appreciation and even anticipation.
